Contact Information for Businesses in Kenton-on-Sea
Kenton-on-Sea, more commonly known as Kenton, is a small coastal town on the
Sunshine Coast, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It is situated between the
Bushman's River and the Kariega River, and lies approximately half way between
the industrial centres of East London (180km) and Port Elizabeth (130km).
Kenton-on-Sea is one of the most beautiful places in the country - the Kariega
beach was voted the best beach in South Africa just 6 years ago. Kenton has a
population of only about 1000 people, but is a popular holiday resort, and the
population triples over the period of the December Summer holidays. The area
has many pristine beaches and green rolling hills, and a nature reserve along
the shore ensures that no housing developments can spoil the coast.
The mouths of the Boesmans and Kariega rivers and both tidal waterways offer
great fishing and bird-watching opportunities. There are rolling sand dunes,
fantastic rock pools and rock formations to delight both adult and child alike.
The two rivers are navigable and sightings of the fish eagle and little sunbird
are frequent.
Kenton-on-Sea is a great destination for nature lovers as well as adventure
seekers as it is only a few kilometres from a number of game reserves that
offer malaria free game viewing, including the Big Five. Aside from a plethora
of water sports, Kenton-on-Sea offers hiking trails, mountain biking, township
tours and is close enough to Grahamstown to afford easy access to the annual
National Arts Festival.
Unusually for a small town in South Africa, Kenton is predominantly
English-speaking, while Boesmansriviermond on the opposite banks of the
Bushman's River, is predominantly Afrikaans-speaking. Being in the Eastern
Cape, the townships and surrounding areas are Xhosa-speaking.
